Parent Prom Checklist
Supporting your student without overwhelming the experience
Parents who want to support their child through prom without taking over the experience need a clear checklist. Here it is.
Budget conversation (six months out): Have a direct conversation about what the family budget covers. Be specific — does it include the formalwear, the ticket, the transportation, or some combination? Clarity early prevents resentment and scrambling later.
Formalwear decision (four months out): Be involved in the formalwear process without making the decision for your child. Visit the Malik Alexander collection together. Discuss options. Let your son or daughter make the final choice — but be present for it.
Safety conversation (ongoing, final version two weeks before): Have the no-alcohol, no-drugs, safe transportation conversation clearly and without drama. Establish curfew. Discuss what to do if plans change. Make sure your child has your phone number as the first call if anything goes wrong.
Photography (day of prom): Pre-prom photos are one of the most important parts of the experience. Plan the location, invite the right people, and allow enough time. Do not rush this part.
Transportation (book four weeks before): Verify the transportation plan is safe and confirmed. Know the driver, the car, and the route.
The most important parent prom checklist item: trust the preparation you have done. If you have had the right conversations, made the right investments, and set clear expectations — let your child enjoy the night. That is the goal.
